The type of connection I have come to understand from the material of “ We Are Data” with our latest reading for our assignments has really opened up my mind more and has also made me understand how the internet truly works with our searches. From the reading of “What is an RSS Feed? (And Where to Get It)” has made me really look deep into the true meaning of what the last material of “We Are Data” is truly talking about, RSS means Really Simple Syndication which is a type of method that can help with us in order to stay up to date with our favorite things whether it’s websites, blogs, and any type of social media types of channels. Which is another way of understanding the algorithms that the internet makes for us where it gives us the latest news of our favorite things if there’s a new release or a new type of information about our favorite celebrity. RSS is a type of feed that “consolidates information sources in one place and provides updates when a site adds new content.” Apparently anyone can find out if a website or any types of channels that we use in order to find things or buy things has a RSS where we just have to look on the site’s main home page where it’ll sometimes display their RSS feed as an orange button, however not all RSS icons will look the same. The interesting part is that the RSS feed can list feeds of many different types of websites that cover a similar topic or something that is similar to one person’s liking. Which makes sense of the true meaning of what the “We Are Data” is portraying in their reading of what it’s talking about how we provide different types of information and how the algorithms work with any type of social media we use whether it’s on our computers or our phones.
I really do think that this type of information is very useful in our future since it really does show that there really isn’t much privacy in my opinion of the things we like and just how things truly work like purchases as well and how they target us. I don’t think this will affect me in a professional capacity but just make me more aware of my social media. I do feel like I understand the ethics of the ideas of what this lesson is about and just how cautious we truly have to be on our social media and how they target us as well according to things we like.
Hi Renae! I really enjoyed reading your post and hearing what you had to say about the chapters we have read. I personally have a better understanding after reading your post about RSS feed and what exactly it is. The internet can gather more information than we think just through us googling something. This is how companies can target potential new customers to buy their services or products. I think it is smart to be cautious when using social media as you truly never know whats being pulled from the data on your phone. Great job!
ReplyDeleteHey Renae, this was a great explanation of what RSS is. Though RSS helps companies create more specific advertisements, I think it does a great job of helping everyone stay connected; simultaneously, we should be aware of what we allow to be shared publicly.
