Metrics and Analytics: LJ2

The reading of “We Are Data” gives interesting points when reading about today's networking society and how it describes how we are seen and even how our private information from “gender, ethnicity, class, age, education level, and potentially the status of parent with x number of children.” can be displayed for others to see without us even knowing. It’s very interesting how much private information can be produced about someone that we don’t even know as well as photos as well that is easy access for others to see.

I personally don’t really feel any difference in knowing this type of information since I’ve always known that the internet always had access to many different types of information without many people knowing it. But it does also make me be a bit more cautious and to have a better outlook whenever doing a simple search or even when it comes to posting something as well to always be cautious as well of what it can lead to as well in the future. This information won’t really change my personal use on social media apps except apps or any type of social media applications that ask for more information details such as phone number or address, I always had a tendency to always avoid apps that used those types of information and would usually put in false information.

Professional usage I don’t see any problem at all since it’s a way for me to understand social media, by being in this class it gives an understanding of how everything works through network and social media. It also gives me an understanding as well to always think if something is ok to post or not and what can also put one at risk when it comes to certain things . I do feel like it’s a positive in the professional field since many different types of companies or just depending on where one works can be strict about social media and what one employee displays for the media to see, which is why I feel like it’s a positive to me since it’ll always keep me in high alert of what I’m doing on social media.

A concerning thing that I found when reading was about the algorithms, since every social media site uses algorithms in order to satisfy one’s taste in clothing or even videos which is nice but how it can also be used for different things “In other words, online you are not who you think you are. Indeed, one of the key consequences of our algorithmic identities is how they recast the politics around identity into the exclusive, private parlance of capital or state power.” (Cheney-Lippold, 2017, p.5). The thought and knowing that is mind blowing since it’s so interesting how they can assign based on one’s search and just create in a way a false person but at the same time it’s ourselves.

  1. Hi Renae,
Your blog was very well written. I also didn't really feel any different, but reading it was just a little crazy. I like how you said that they create a false person, but at the same time it is actually ourselves. The algorithm has so much data, but it isn't the full amount of data about a person. In some ways it is true about a person, however, it is not the whole person. Great post!

  2. Hi Renae,
I resonated with your last paragraph on the concern about how social medias use algorithms in order to lure in possible purchases of clothes, or even items that you may have an interest in. I believe that Instagram is perfect example of this as it tends to give me ads of Items I have actually looked up google before.
